Hello everyone, I know that I have been missing for the past couple of weeks. I have been out of pocket, on a work trip and not able to do any crafting or posting. I have missed it :) I work in the education department of the Texas State Historical Association and we have been at theFort McKavett State Historic Site, near Menard, Texas for our Old Stories, New Voices Intercultural Summer Camp. This camp is awesome!!! We took 52 students, aged 9-12, to live at Fort McKavett for a week. I got to meet some great new counselors and kids. Each day of the camp we have content presenters and learn about a different Texas culture. The first day was Native American day and we made bandolier bags, weaving, learned archery, played shinny (a Native American game played with sticks and a ball, similar to field hockey), went swimming and watched a performance by the Eagle Point Singers, which is a Native American group who performs using drums, singing, and dancing. The second day was Hispanic Heritage day and we learned how to make flour and corn tortillas, painted retablos, learned about archeology, visited the Presidio de San Saba and the Menardville Museum, and finished the day with a performance by a mariachi band. The third day was Buffalo Solider day and we learned drill and ceremony, how to march like soldiers, whittling, visited the Fort McKavett museum, went swimming, and played a game of 19th century baseball. The fourth day was Nature day and we went to the South Llano River State Park in Junction, Texas and went canoeing down the river, had a cookout, went on a nature walk, and slept in tents overnight. The last day was Fort day and we went back to Fort McKavett, learned about frontier life, played artifact bingo, and went swimming one last time. All the kids were from the Austin/San Antonio area and on the way home, we stopped in historic Fredericksburg, Texas and visited the National Museum of the Pacific War (World War II). If you have never been before, it is amazing. If you want to see more about the camp, visit our Facebook page. If camp wasn't exciting enough, while I was out at the fort, I was offered a position on the Fantabulous Cricut Challenge Blog Design Team. I am so excited to be a part of this wonderful blog and look forward to participating meeting new crafty friends and creating projects for each of the challenges. I just finished my first project for the blog and will be participating in the FCCB Cricut Crawl (our version of a blog hop). I might even have some blog candy to give away as well.
